Overcoming Bias: Moving Beyond Words & Into Action

 

Everybody's biased—even nice people like you. We all harbor unconscious assumptions about people who are different from us that get in the way of our good intentions and keep us from working together harmoniously and effectively. So in an increasingly diverse and globalized world, what does respecting difference actually require? And right here in Richmond, Virginia what can we do? In this impactful session, author and acclaimed speaker Tiffany Jana will teach you how to identify your personal points of privilege, make genuine connections with people who aren’t like you, and figure out how to break down social barriers across a spectrum of differences (race, religion, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and more). She will discuss hidden biases and show how they arise from our histories and cloud our perceptions.

The Inclusion Paradox: Why Your Current Diversity Strategy is Not Enough

Dramatically changing demographics are upending politics, marketplaces, workplaces and communities. What do those changes mean for our future? In this thought provoking session, diversity through thought leader Andres Tapia explores the cultural implications of what has been the Obama Era, and what it takes to move into the next generation of diversity work to grow business and attract and retain the best talent. He makes the case that the work of diversity and inclusion has never been more urgent, particularly in an era of polarization around the world, as everything has globalized, and paradoxically, atomized at a massive scale. Yet nations and companies are woefully and dangerously unprepared for this diversity. Because it's one thing to acknowledge the diversity already here, quite another to make the most out of it. Mr. Tapia will offer practical and strategic solutions for how anyone, including business, diversity, human resources and community leaders, can make organizations and the people in them stronger, more productive, and more successful.
